Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities

  1. Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner at all times.
  2. Honor all dates as stated in the contract.
  3. Carry out all responsibilities as specified in the internship duties.
  4. Arrive on time and work the scheduled times.
  5. Dress appropriately. (Individual company will determine dress)
  6. Provide a written summary of your work experience to your company supervisor and the YHFP. (Minimum of two pages)


Company Supervisor Responsibilities

  1. Ensure that the students understand the nature of the program and the obligations it involves.
  2. Meet with the student prior to the beginning of the work experience for a briefing and review of mutual obligations.
  3. Be available to counsel with the student from time to time as the situation might dictate.
  4. Review the work record and written summary of the work experience and provide feedback to the student.


Company Responsibilities

  1. Provide the intern with an opportunity to participate in the organization's program and management functions in a way designed to develop organizational insight.
  2. Designate qualified personnel to serve as the work experience supervisor.
  3. Provide meaningful orientation for the intern regarding the organization's purpose, services, organizational structure, and operating practices.
  4. Provide for intern contact with appropriate staff members.
  5. Provide for periodic work planning and review sessions between the intern and field supervisor to assess program and plan for continued learning.
  6. Make available space, supplies and other resources needed for carrying out task assignments.
  7. Conduct performance evaluation of the intern and provide a copy to the student and the YHFP.
  8. Provide a safe work environment.


Planning Questions for Interns

Companies differ. Management styles are diverse, and your needs may not be the same as your colleagues. Therefore, there are no set questions for a potential internship site. However, listed below are some suggested items that you may find helpful.

Note: You should organize much of the information to the questions below in your written summary.

  1. What is the overall mission of the organization?
  2. Is the organization's mission consistent with your goals?
  3. What is the structure of the organization (i.e., national, regional, local)?
  4. What is the planning process of the organization?
  5. What is the role of the professional in the organization?
  6. How is one's performance reviewed?
  7. What are the major problems and difficulties encountered by this organization?
  8. What, if any, career development opportunities are available?
  9. What personal qualities does this company find useful?
  10. What skills are most beneficial to any entry level professional?
